Summary of the Position

The Business Development Specialist, reporting to the Manager of Partnerships & Business Development will support the Global Business Development team by providing new business expertise to meet the Department’s diversification goals. The Business Development Specialist will work to identify and secure new externally funded opportunities to expand existing programs as well as implementing a marketing strategy aligned with USP’s strategy for donor-funded work. This position will 1) lead on identifying, tracking and summarizing key public funding trends including donor strategies and potential future opportunities; 2) manage solicitations, as assigned, including writing non-technical sections of concept notes and proposals; 3) develop materials for decision-making, including Go/No-Go decisions as well as partner and donor briefs to generate new business for USP.

Roles and Responsibilities

Research & Analysis – 50%

  • Researches, monitors, tracks, analyzes and disseminates internally new opportunities from the US and other institutional funders, Global Fund, CDC, Gates and other relevant donors
  • Conducts in-depth landscape research and analysis to develop donor and organizational briefs and other business strategy documents to support internal decision-making as assigned by the Manager, Partnerships and Business Development
  • Contributes to and maintains a tracking system for new opportunities, enabling coordination and progress reporting for the Global Business Development and Leadership team
  • Manages and updates a current database of key contacts: donor staff, partners and consultants

Proposal Process Management  – 35%

  • Manages and makes improvements to existing systems and processes for proposal management from capture to submission including managing a platform to track the new business pipeline, a Go/No-Go process and proposal preparation and submission (calendars, annotated proposal templates, deliverable tracking tool, etc.)
  • Manages proposal development process and submission for assigned opportunities
  • Provides additional support to the Global Business Development team, other leaders in Global Health Programs, and in coordination with technical and program leads as required.
  • Conducts business ethically and model behavior and best practices that uphold USP core values

Editing and writing – 15%

  • Writes and updates past performance references/project descriptions, organizational capability statements, and boilerplate language related to core, technical USP GPH competencies
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • BA degree required
  • 3 years’ experience in a new business capacity at an international development for-profit or non-profit with activities in global health funded by donor agencies such as: USAID, CDC, Global Fund, Gates Foundation, DfID, World Bank and other institutional funding mechanisms as relates to pharmaceuticals/quality medicines or at a minimum health systems in LMICs.
  • Excellent research, analysis, writing, editing, and communication skills
