Responsibilities

The Tribal Health Research Office coordinates tribal health research-related activities across NIH through the position of the THRO Director, serves as a liaison to and NIH representative on tribal health related committees or working groups, coordinates and convenes the NIH Tribal Advisory Committee, collaborates with NIH ICs on the development of reports on tribal health topics, manages information dissemination related to tribal health research coordination and the Tribal Advisory Committee, convenes trans-NIH committees, workshops, meetings and other activities related to tribal health research and scientific priorities, and works with NIH ICs to leverage resources or develop and manages initiatives to support tribal health research.

Major Duties Will Include

  • Provides expert guidance, advice, and assistance on major tribal health research policy issues affecting NIH, the national biomedical research community, and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities across the country
  • Performs a range of senior-level functions involving researching, analyzing, and planning for key policy and program decisions by the NIH leadership
  • Works with the NIH Tribal Health Research Coordinating Committee (THRCC) to increase the number of trans-NIH initiatives involving multiple ICs.
  • Serves as the THRO and agency representative in engaging with policy-level officials to ensure that the respective views and interests are promoted with respect to current and emerging tribal health research policy issues, and that those views are taken into consideration in policy development and implementation
  • Serves as a tribal health research policy representative for the THRO with the members and technical advisors to the NIH Tribal Advisory Committee (TAC) which is composed of tribal leaders or their designees from the 12 Indian Health Service areas and 5 National At-Large Members.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GS-14 level if you meet the following qualification requirements:

A. Possess a degree in a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position from an accredited organization.

AND

B. Have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: providing technical and administrative expertise and leadership to resolve complex Tribal health science policy issues; collaborating with other staff to identify and resolve issues impacting health research initiatives; and, independently developing reports and other documents on research programs and policies.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
