Job Summary
The Department of Epidemiology, at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, studies the frequency, distribution, and determinants of disease in humans, a fundamental science of public health. The HaSET (“happiness” in Amharic) Global Maternal and Child Health Research Program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Boston Children’s Hospital invites applications for a Research Project and Data Assistant (Research Assistant III) position. HaSET works closely with partners in Ethiopia and Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health to generate evidence to improve maternal and child health programs and policies. Job-Specific Responsibilities
The Research Project and Data Assistant will assist a vibrant research program on maternal and child health. This position will provide full-time data analysis and research support, working closely with colleagues in Boston and Ethiopia in the following areas:
- Data analysis and management
- Study implementation and protocol development
- Capacity building and mentorship
- Coordinates and carries out designated research activities and projects, making use of selected methodology and materials, field work, library research, statistical analysis, or other investigative techniques.
- Develops analytical plans independently
- Conducts data analysis using STATA and R
- Supports data management and data quality initiatives, including data cleaning and quality assurance
- Participates in the development and implementation of study protocols, including development of study questionnaires
- Performs literature searches and data abstraction
- Contributes to publish abstracts, poster presentations and research articles
- Prepares data reports for IRB submissions, funder reports, grant proposals
- Mentors students and junior team members
- Performs other duties as assigned
PLEASE NOTE: Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit work samples, and finalists will be administered a data management assessment/exercise.
PLEASE NOTE: Once normal operation resume, there may be opportunity to travel to Ethiopia.
PLEASE NOTE: The primary work location for this position is Boston, Massachusetts. Until our return to campus, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process and position will be conducted virtually – including virtual interviews, remote onboarding, and remote work. The remote nature of this position is only temporary. Local, on-campus work will be required once the School and this role return to an operational status that supports it.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of related experience with 2+ years of experience in data analysis using statistical software such as STATA or SAS; a combination of education and experience will be considered
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree strongly preferred; Master's degree preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office strongly preferred
- Experience with a version control system (such as Github) strongly preferred
- Knowledge of statistical methods, including longitudinal data analysis, strongly preferred
- Excellent communication, verbal, writing, and presentation skills preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills to work with collaborators, stakeholders, and team members preferred
- Strong attention to detail, excellent time management and organizational skills, experience prioritizing multiple tasks, goal and detail-oriented work style, and follow through on projects all preferred
- Commitment to maternal, newborn, and child health preferred
- Knowledge of statistical methods frequently used in public health research preferred
- Demonstrated professionalism and respect for human research preferred

- This position has a 90 day orientation and review (O&R) period. The O&R period will be waived for any internal Harvard employee transfers.
