SALARY: $1,869 bi-weekly (exempt, salaried position)

ANTICIPATED TIMEFRAME: 6 months, full-time

 

INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Global Health Data Analytics Hub (the Hub) is a dynamic center of data organization, management, analysis and visualization. The Hub is organized within the Strategy, Analysis, Evaluation and Outreach Division (SAEO) in the Office for Policy, Programs and Planning (P3) within the Bureau for Global Health (GH). In this capacity, the Hub is a small group of data scientists and visualization experts which fulfill the Hub’s mandate of: organizing, managing, and analyzing data on global, country and regional trends related to health and on USAID programmatic impact; producing cutting-edge visualizations; improving GH’s ability to use data for storytelling and communication; and strengthen USAID’s in-house capacity for self-service data analytics.

 

Introduction:

The Data Visualization Intern (Intern) will assist the Data Analytics Hub team with data visualizations, communication materials and capacity-building content for the Data Analytics Hub's portfolio and development curriculum. They will also have opportunities to support GH Offices and Field Missions on a variety of data analytics, visualizations and data science activities, using data sources such as the Demographic and Health Surveys, UNICEF global database, and the World Bank World Development Indicators, amongst others.

 

Reporting structure:

The Intern will work closely with the Data Analytics Hub Team and receive technical guidance from the GH Data Analytics Hub Lead who will serve as their point of contact.

 

OUTCOMES

 By the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:

  • Preparation of data visualizations using Tableau desktop software for USAID presentations and Data Analytics Hub website publication.
  • Data Science experience in how to manage, organize, analyze and visualize data into stories for varied audiences.
  • Critical thinking skills and practical experience in turning data into insight and helping different audiences use exploratory and explanatory analysis to drive decisions.

Essential Duties:

  • Support specific data science projects on topics of relevance to USAID global health priorities (including maternal, newborn and child health, tuberculosis, neglected tropical diseases, water and sanitation, and malaria and nutrition).
  • Provide analytic and visualization support by organizing, managing, transforming and preparing datasets for analytics and visualization use.
  • Visualize USAID global health programming data, management information, and global health and international development data using Tableau.
  • Collaborate with USAID staff to generate new content and/or prepare Data Analytics Hub's analyses for online publications or communication.
  • In coordination with the team, support Missions, upon request, in identifying specific needs for analysis and evaluation, conducting analyses, and assisting with analytic approaches.
  • Support the Hub’s communications and knowledge management needs, including organizing and managing knowledge and content generated by the Hub and assist with the preparation of materials for communication products and presentations.
  • Contribute to administrative tasks for the Hub, including scheduling meetings and taking meeting notes.
  • Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational and programming needs and/or the Intern's own interests.

 

Anticipated learning outcomes:

All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*approximately 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:

  • Gain exposure to data analysis and visualization through global health programming.
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.

 

INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Required:

  • Currently enrolled master’s or other post-bachelor's degree candidate in a program related to data science, statistics or computer science, public health and/or public policy or, completion of such within the past 12 months.
  • Experience in data analysis and visualization using Tableau desktop software and statistical software such as R, Python or STATA.
  • Experience creating communication materials (using Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, Tableau Storybook, Adobe Illustrator or other similar tools) to enhance storytelling with data and synthesize information for varied audiences.
  • Strong writing and analytic skills are required.
  • Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
  • This position may require travel. Ability to participate in a field experience, which may involve domestic and/or international travel and overnight stays for up to 2 weeks pending lifting of COVID-19 restrictions.
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.?

 

 

Additional skills (preferred):

  • Experience living and working in a resource-challenged setting and/or familiarity with global health issues and interventions is preferred.
  • Experience in survey design and/or administration, monitoring and evaluation or research.
  • Experience in knowledge management and/or strong organizational skills.
