CHAI’s global malaria program provides direct technical and operational support to countries around the globe to strengthen their malaria programs and reduce the burden of this preventable, treatable disease. We support governments to scale up effective interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance, with the goals of sustainably reducing the number of malaria-related illnesses and deaths worldwide in the short-term and accelerating progress towards malaria elimination in the long term. A pillar of CHAI’s strategy is helping donors and governments plan which commodity-dependent interventions would be most effective, where these interventions should be applied, and the type and volume of commodities that malaria programs will require to achieve programmatic goals.
Overview of Role:
CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong epidemiological and analytical skills to help build a long-term forecasting framework, and contribute to the identification of key scenarios for the projection of malaria metrics (prevalence, incidence, fever, access to care) and commodities (diagnostics, treatment, insecticides, and bednets). This individual is expected to independently acquire, process, and analyze multiple datasets, including geospatial data, run simulations using available mathematical models of malaria transmission, and validate analytical outputs. The individual will work closely with CHAI team members as well as academic and other stakeholders on designing methods, interpretation of outputs, and communication of results through effective data visualization and adaptation of messaging to audiences with a variety of technical backgrounds.

Responsibilities
- Support the design of the methodological framework to forecast malaria metrics and commodities;
- Identify, collate and manage available epidemiological, demographics, and commodity datasets and assess suitability for analysis;
- Conduct statistical and spatial analyses (descriptive analyses, regressions and other relevant methods) to forecast malaria metrics and commodities needs;
- Define modeling questions, conduct simulations, and interpret output of mathematical malaria transmission models to audiences of a variety of backgrounds;
- Iterate on geospatial analyses and projections and mathematical modeling to validate analytical outputs;
- Translate highly technical findings for a general audience less familiar with statistical methods;
- Collaborate with academic groups (i.e. Malaria Atlas Project) and other project partners for the generation of analytical outputs for forecasting malaria metrics and malaria commodities;
- Provide high quality guidance on biostatistical inference and apply appropriate analytics methods for analyses related to malaria epidemiology and impact of interventions;
- Synthesize results and communicate them through high-quality data visualizations, presentations, reports, and publications to internal and external audiences of a variety of technical backgrounds;
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with relevant CHAI team members, academic institutions, and other partners;
- Any other tasks as required.
Qualifications
- PhD or Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, or related quantitative discipline;
- 3+ years of working experience;
- Proficiency in biostatistics;
- Strong statistical and geospatial analysis programming experience (R, SAS, STATA, ArcGIS, QGIS and/or other relevant software);
- Knowledge of mathematical modeling, particularly in relation to malaria and/or other major global infectious disease problems;
- Knowledge of malaria and/or other major global infectious disease problems;
- Superb creative problem-solving skills and analytical capabilities;
- Ability to improvise with a variety of quantitative approaches to solve complex problems despite unreliable data;
- High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications;
- Ability to work independently in remote and unstructured settings and to adapt to new environments and challenges;
- Enthusiasm for applying research methods and communicating outcomes effectively to solve global health problems;
- Exceptional data visualization, written, and oral communication skills;
- Willingness to travel (up to 20% of time).
