Rails Developer Intern 

DETAILS

Simple is a digital tool that supports large-scale hypertension programs in India, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia. The Simple Team is composed of experts in many fields—from software designers and engineers to public health officials and doctors. We’re a diverse team spread around the world—from India and the UK to San Francisco, Wisconsin, and New York.

The engineering intern will be focused on the Simple.org project at Resolve to Save Lives, with a particular focus on the Simple Dashboard, which is used by health systems managers to monitor how their hypertension program is doing. The intern will be working with experienced Rails developers in the US and India to make improvements to the Simple Dashboard and to develop new features. The intern will work on real open source code that will benefit patients around the world.

Responsibilities

  • Help to deliver features, fix bugs, and maintain our main Ruby on Rails application (https://github.com/simpledotorg/simple-server). This includes our admin dashboard, sync API, and various async jobs and tasks.
  • Review engineering work, provide quality feedback, and give suggestions to engineering peers
  • Assist in QA (quality assurance)
  • Build out an acceptance test suite for our charts.js admin dashboards with a tool like Cypress (https://www.cypress.io/)
  • Work with our product and design team to iterate on product ideas. The intern will ensure that our user experience is high quality and simple to use for health professionals.
  • Work closely with other engineers via remote pair-programming, code review sessions, and pull requests

​Cardiovascular Health Intern

DETAILS

The Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL) Cardiovascular Health Initiative provides assistance and targeted investment to governments and civil society, with a focus on three strategies proven to significantly reduce risk: eliminating trans-fat from the global food supply, improving treatment of high blood pressure, and reducing salt intake. RTSL work is primarily focused in 10 countries and has offices in India, China, Ethiopia and Nigeria.

Successful program design is founded on evidence from clinical and field studies. Government policies and budgets aligned with program goals are also important ingredients. This intern will support the Cardiovascular Health team by generating and summarizing clinical, public health, and policy evidence to guide the work. They will also generate case studies of successful projects, helping to facilitate learning across RTSL project sites.


Qualifications:

  • Required skills: Familiarity with basic epidemiology, statistics, and program evaluation principles

Communications Intern

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for the media team, including but not limited to press inbox triage, daily media prep packets and summaries, research and background work, project management, copy editing and proofreading support, writing first drafts of various communications products, and event planning
  • Monitor the press inbox and triage requests for RTSL subject matter experts
  • Track non-media external communications activities, such as speeches and high-profile presentations, liaise with event organizers and prepare materials
  • Analyze media team impact and share analytics with senior staff
  • Support press conference execution, including logistics and content
  • Support behavior change communication campaign execution

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student who has completed at least two semesters of school
  • Area of study: Communications, Journalism, Behavior Change, or Public Relations

Internship Details:

LINKS Intern

LINKS is an online community and resource center for people working to improve cardiovascular health across the globe. This project aims to accelerate implementation of evidence-based strategies in hypertension, salt reduction, and elimination of artificial trans-fat. LINKS stands for:

S: Support for eligible organizations in low- and middle-income countries


Duties and Responsibilities:

The intern will be responsible for general maintenance of the https://linkscommunity.org/ website as well as providing administrative support to the LINKS grants program and community building activities. Tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Redesign the toolkits by arranging focus groups of LINKS members to get input on user experience, developing a new structure
  • Adding new materials, fixing broken links, supporting the development of any new resource guide or pages
  • Designing scalability & sustainability frameworks for existing grantees
  • Provide support during the budget and proposal revision process for Round 3
  • Reconcile and update progress & finance report tracking system
  • Data analysis of community building activities
  • Other duties as required by the LINKS Program Manager

Office of the President Intern

DETAILS

The Office of the President directly supports Dr. Tom Frieden, President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives (RTSL), former Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and former Commissioner of the New York City Health Department. The intern will report to Robynn Cheng Leidig, Manager of Strategic Initiatives, and assignments will be mutually agreed upon.


Potential projects and responsibilities include:

Health disparities. Research issues related to health disparities, including access to health, Universal Health Coverage, primary health care, quality of care, and value of care, and identify opportunities to incorporate into Resolve’s existing or future work.

Policy. Research and develop policy ideas to address racial disparities in COVID-19 testing, treatment, contact tracing, and supportive isolation/ quarantine.

Partnerships. Develop a list of trusted community organizations, advocacy partners, and influencers working to address racial disparities in the US. Assist in developing and compiling background materials for high-level calls with key partners.

Communications: contribute to a variety of communications projects, including social media support, synthesizing calls with media, updating the website, developing presentations, contributing to Op-eds and publications, etc.

Epidemiology: analyze data, synthesize findings, and contribute to a COVID-19 science insight.

Trainings. Research, organize, and partake in professional development opportunities. Compile of list of recommended individual training opportunities for staff to use towards professional development funds.

Shape internship program/ workforce development. Organize and identify opportunities for fellow interns to share learnings, present their work to staff, and provide feedback to the organization. Help shape the future of the RTSL internship program!

Product Design Intern

Join the Simple Tech Team as a Product Design Intern to improve the Simple Dashboard and help us save 100 million lives from cardiovascular disease. The Simple Dashboard is a responsive web app used by health officials in India, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia to monitor and manage hypertension control programs. The dashboard displays reports and has features to manage the hypertension program remotely.


About the Simple Team: The Simple Team is composed of experts in many fields—from software designers and engineers to public health officials and doctors. We’re a diverse team spread around the world—from India and the UK to San Francisco, Wisconsin, and New York.

Who you’ll work with: You’ll work very closely with a Product Designer. Together you’ll collaborate with the rest of the Simple Team to improve the Dashboard experience.

What you’ll work on: You’ll improve the experience of the Simple Dashboard to make it easier for health officials to monitor and manage their hypertension control programs. You will be involved in web design, information design, user research, copywriting, and other aspects of product design. Working alongside you, we will define features, talk to ‘customers’, and design components of the Simple Dashboard. If you are interested and capable of writing front-end code, you could also be helping to implement features you have designed. You will design and ship real features that will be used by real healthcare workers and health system managers around the world.


Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student
