IPI NY is currently seeking applications for the following internship positions:
Editorial Intern
Women, Peace and Security Intern

Editorial Intern
This internship is situated within IPI’s publications team to assist the Editor in producing and disseminating IPI books, policy papers, issue briefs, and related materials at IPI’s headquarters in New York City. The intern will gain experience editing policy writing and managing the production of publications and will have the opportunity to learn from IPI’s ongoing research on the multilateral system, peace operations, sustainable development, and women, peace, and security.
The selected candidate will be expected to work virtually through the duration of the three-month internship. Although the successful candidate does not need to be based in New York City, the candidate should be available during standard IPI working hours (9am-5pm EST).
Responsibilities
Copyediting, formatting citations, fact checking, and proofreading publications, and copyediting other IPI communications as required
Maintaining the house style guide
Conducting photo research for publications
Assisting with the dissemination of publications on social media
Managing books purchases and subscriptions to journals, magazines, and newspapers
Conducting publications-related administrative tasks
Performing other ad hoc tasks as determined by the Editor
Qualifications
Outstanding editing ability, with acute attention to detail, a passion for grammar, and opinions about punctuation
Outstanding writing ability, with an understanding of how to convey ideas concisely and clearly
Good eye for design and formatting
BA, particularly in international affairs or a related field
Knowledge of Chicago style desirable
Experience copyediting, proofreading, or working as a writing tutor preferred
Familiarity with or interest in multilateral institutions a plus
Knowledge of written French a plus

Women, Peace and Security Intern
IPI seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, three-month paid virtual internship (with the possibility of renewal) as part of IPI’s Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Program. The expected start date will be the beginning of January 2021.
This internship is situated in IPI’s WPS Program, which covers IPI’s work on the full spectrum of women’s rights and roles in peace and security, including conflict prevention, mediation, peace operations, peacebuilding and sustaining peace.
The intern will report directly to the WPS program’s Senior Policy Analyst, and will work closely with all members of the WPS team. The intern may also have opportunities to work with other IPI programs on an ad hoc basis. The intern will gain knowledge and skills from on-the-job experience, with the WPS team providing guidance and feedback to facilitate the learning process.
The selected candidate will be expected to work virtually through the duration of three-month internship. Although the successful candidate does not need to be based in New York City, the candidate should be available during standard IPI working hours (9am-5pm EST).
Responsibilities
Identify, analyze and monitor political developments and trends in relations to women, peace and security;
Research and contribute to drafting analytical reports on issues related to women, peace and security, including but not limited to women’s rights and roles in conflict prevention and resolution, peace operations, peacebuilding and sustaining peace;
Assist with the substantive and technical preparation of meetings, workshops, and seminars;
Interact with a broad range of international and regional actors working on these topics at the multilateral level;
Provide support in the implementation of a large international survey;
Support the social media processes for the program;
Contribute WPS analysis to IPI’s policy blog, The Global Observatory; and
Perform various administrative tasks in support of WPS programming.
Qualifications
Graduate-level coursework in international affairs, political science, or a related field, with an interest or focus on issues related to gender/women’s rights and international peace and security;
Knowledge of UN institutions and multilateral policy processes;
Outstanding research, analytical, and English writing skills;
Fluency in English; proficiency in an additional official UN language is an added value;
Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment, with demonstrated sensitivity and respect for diversity and gender;
Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; and
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.

Brian Urquhart Center for Peace Operations – Intern
IPI seeks qualified applicants for a full-time, three-month paid virtual internship (with the possibility of renewal) as part of IPI’s Brian Urquhart Center for Peace Operations (CPO). The expected start date will be the beginning of January 2021.
This internship is situated in the Brian Urquhart Center for Peace Operations (CPO), which covers IPI’s work on the full spectrum of peace and security issues, including prevention, mediation, peace operations, peacebuilding and sustaining peace, preventing violent extremism, and UN reform.
The intern will report directly to CPO’s Policy Analysts. The successful candidate will work with all members of the CPO team, and will interact with other IPI programs. The intern will gain knowledge and skills from on-the-job experience, with the CPO Team providing guidance and feedback to facilitate the learning process.
The selected candidate will be expected to work virtually through the duration of three-month internship. Although the successful candidate does not need to be based in New York City, the candidate should be available during standard IPI working hours (9am-5pm EST).

Brian Urquhart Center for Peace Operations & Humanitarian Affairs – Intern
IPI seeks qualified applicants for a three-month paid virtual internship (with the possibility of renewal) as part of IPI’s Brian Urquhart Center for Peace Operations. The intern will be expected to work on peace operations, protection of civilians, humanitarian affairs, and human rights. The expected start date will be the beginning of January 2021.
This internship is situated in the Brian Urquhart Center for Peace Operations (CPO), which covers IPI’s work on the full spectrum of peace and security issues, including prevention, mediation, peace operations, protection of civilians, peacebuilding and sustaining peace, as well as humanitarian action and UN reforms.
The Protection of Civilians Program was established in 2017, and focuses on the various challenges related to the implementation of protection of civilians mandates in UN peace operations, both at a policy and practical level. Through research, convening, outreach and strategic advice, it seeks to enhance the delivery of POC mandates on the ground in partnership with the UN Secretariat, Member States and field operations.
The Humanitarian Program seeks to support policy-makers in developing solutions to stem the impacts of sanctions and counterterrorism measures on humanitarian action, and ensure better respect of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) in UN decisions and programming, in this regard.
The selected candidate will be expected to work virtually through the duration of the three-month internship. Although the successful candidate does not need to be based in New York City, the candidate should be available during standard IPI working hours (9am-5pm EST).
The intern will support IPI’s protection of civilians program, the humanitarian affairs program, and the Center for Peace Operations more generally. The intern is expected to focus on peacekeeping, protection of civilians, human rights and humanitarian issues, but may be asked to work on broader issues related to the work of CPO. The intern will gain knowledge and skills from on-the-job experience, with CPO providing guidance and feedback to facilitate the learning process.
Responsibilities
Support the implementation of IPI’s protection of civilians and humanitarian affairs programs;
Conduct background research and contribute to drafting analytical reports on issues related to peace operations, and more specifically protection of civilians, humanitarian issues and human rights;
Interact with a broad range of international and regional actors working on these topics at the multilateral level;
Assist with the substantive and technical preparation of IPI meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, briefings and field conversations, in coordination with IPI’s Events team;
Participate in and contribute to interviews, meetings, seminars or workshops;
Perform various administrative tasks in support of CPO programming.
Qualifications
Graduate-level coursework in international affairs, political science, international law or a related field, with an interest or focus on issues related to peacekeeping, protection of civilians and humanitarian affairs;
Outstanding research, analytical, and English writing skills; and excellent oral communication skills;
Fluency in French or another official UN language is an added value;
Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;
Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multicultural environment, with demonstrated sensitivity and respect for diversity and gender;
Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
