Global Health in the COVID-19 Era: Leadership in Action

The 2020 Triangle Global Health Annual Conference will explore global health in the COVID-19 era. Global health organizations in North Carolina and around the world are leaders in our collective responses to the COVID-19 pandemic. This conference will showcase North Carolina’s holistic and multifaceted local and global approach to COVID-19  – uniting academic research, policy and planning, vaccine research and development, environmental health, implementation science, big data analytics, and more. In addition, this virtual conference will explore the impact of COVID-19 on long-term global health initiatives, such as the drive for universal health care coverage, health system strengthening, and achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We also will explore how COVID-19 is interacting with social movements in the U.S, and globally, accelerating the recognition of racism as a public health issue and the need to decolonize global health. Does the pandemic present an opportunity for a better global health vision post-COVID-19?

This program will provide an opportunity for thought leaders, innovators, policy makers, students, and researchers to share their experience and questions through a mix of keynote speakers, panels, workshops, and poster sessions.

      Agnes Binagwaho, MD, M(Ped), PHD

 

 

Professor Agnes Binagwaho, MD, M(Ped), PhD is the Vice Chancellor of the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), an initiative of Partners In Health focused on training the next generation of global health professionals to deliver more equitable, quality, health services for all. She is a Rwandan pediatrician who has served the health sector in various high-level government positions, including five years as Minister of Health. She is a Senior Lecturer at Harvard, serves as Senior Advisor to the Director General of the World Health Organization, a member of the US National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.

Jonathan Quick, MD, MPH 

Dr. Jonathan (“Jono”) D. Quick, MD, MPH, is the Managing Director for Pandemic Response, Preparedness, and Prevention at The Rockefeller Foundation, and adjunct Professor of Global Health, Duke Global Health Institute. He is also Senior Fellow Emeritus at the global health nonprofit Management Sciences for Health (MSH) where he previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer from 2004-2017. Dr. Quick has carried out assignments to improve the health and lives of people in over 70 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. An internationally known global health leader, he is the author of The End of Epidemics: The Looming Threat to Humanity and How to Stop It (2018).

Mandy K Cohen, MD, MPH

Dr. Mandy K. Cohen is the Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and has been recognized as a national leader for her work at DHHS. Dr. Cohen works to improve the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians and was named one of the Top 25 Women Leaders in Healthcare. Before coming to the NC Department of Health and Human Services, she was the Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Dr. Cohen is also an Adjunct Professor in Health Policy & Management at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
