GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision and following established policies and procedures, performs experiments related to specific research projects and participates in other activities appropriate for carrying out research objectives. Reads and understands literature in the field. Conducts actual experiments and collects and analyzes data.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reports to PhD or MD researcher for the purpose of participating in specific experimental, scientific protocols.
Under supervision of the Principal Investigator or lab director, sets-up equipment and conducts experiments following established protocols and research methodology; gathers data for analysis and interpretation of test results.
Conducts critical analyses and evaluation of data generated on patients or from laboratory tests.
Performs various types of experimentation which may use animals and experimental models.
Maintains a high quality record of all experimental results.
Assays samples for analysis of peptides, proteins, DNA and RNA and other molecules.
(Prepares reagents for appropriate assay of samples, including determination of the appropriate concentration of components of solutions and buffers.
May work with radioactive isotopes for the analysis of molecules.
Orders supplies for lab and determines schedule for experiments planned. Makes written progress reports and prepares summaries of data.
Ensures that laboratory equipment is maintained and keeps maintenance records on equipment. Keeps abreast of new techniques and reviews literature in the field pertinent to the area of research.
May assist in writing papers for publication and scientific presentations based on research performed, as well as annual reports and research proposals.
May perform various statistical analyses related to the data generated from an experiment.
Operates sophisticated laboratory equipment to conduct research (such as high pressure liquid chromatography, centrifuges, computers, radioisotope counters, gel electrophoresis equipment, pH meters, balances, spectrophotometers, microscopes, gamma counters, infusion pumps, etc.).
May develops research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, molecular biology or a closely related field to be familiar with research terminology and scientific techniques.
Minimum of up to 6 months of laboratory experience in a stated area of scientific specialty preferred.
Requires the manual dexterity to operate complex equipment.
Familiarity with statistical and research methodology is desirable.
