APHC is currently seeking candidates for three full-time (40 hours per week) Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE) opportunities within the APHC Health and Promotion Wellness Directorate (HPW)
Summary of Available Opportunities
As an ORISE participant, you will receive hands-on public health experience under the mentorship of one
or more government mentors. Participants will engage in evaluation study activities (e.g., scope, develop,
implement evaluation plans; collect and analyze data; read, interpret and translate findings into actionable
recommendations; draft deliverables to aid customers in making data-driven decisions; and provide direct
technical consultation to Army customers.
1) Quantitative Support for Army Wellness Center Program Evaluation: The selected Participant will
receive practical experience in conducting evaluation and ongoing monitoring activities for Army Wellness
Centers (AWC), a U.S. Army Medical Command initiative with oversight from the Army Public Health
Center. The AWCs provide standardized primary prevention programs and services designed to build,
improve, and sustain healthy lifestyles and performance among Soldiers, Family Members, Retirees, and
DA Civilians. Under the guidance of a Public Health Scientist mentor, the Participant will review the
evidence base related to AWC programming and services; identify evidence gaps and methods through
which gaps can be filled; support the development and implementation of evaluation and monitoring
activities, and communicate findings to various audiences through varied dissemination methods such as
oral communication, written deliverables, and/or data visualization products. The ideal participant will be
well versed in quantitative database management, analysis, and reporting (including multivariate
techniques such as linear and logistic regression). The duty location for this opportunity is Aberdeen
Proving Ground - Edgewood Area, MD.
2) U.S. Army SHARP Evaluation Project Support: Through an agreement between the Army Public
Health Center and Army Resilience Directorate, APHC is offering an ORISE opportunity to support
program evaluation activities associated with the Army’s Sexual Harassment Assault Response and
Prevention (SHARP) program. As an APHC participant, you will receive practical experience in
establishing program evaluation frameworks for and conducting evaluation activities related to an Army-
wide sexual harassment and sexual assault response and prevention program. You will have an
opportunity to showcase your knowledge and skills as you take part in various program evaluation
projects supporting APHC’s mission. The ideal participant will be well versed in sexual violence
prevention best practices and means through which those practices can be evaluated. The duty location
for this opportunity is Aberdeen Proving Ground - Edgewood Area, MD.
3) Translational Science Support for Army Public Health Center and Army Family Readiness
Division: The selected Participant will receive practical experience translating evaluation and other
scientific findings into actionable policy-based recommendations, assist execution of program evaluation
projects of mutual interest to APHC and the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCS-G9), Soldier and Family
Readiness Division and providing technical consultation to DCS-G9 personnel to enhance the quality of
life for Soldiers and Family Members. Under the guidance of APHC and DCS-G9 mentors, you will
provide technical consultation to identify and scope evaluation projects, develop tools and resources to
support data-driven decision-making; and support evaluation activities. In attendance with the DCS-G9
mentor, the participant will also attend Headquarters Department of the Army meetings that align with
their role and support the needs of DCS-G9. The ideal participant will be able to determine policy and
programmatic implications resulting from program evaluation and research projects; communicate
complex technical information to a variety of audiences; and identify evidence gaps and means through
which those gaps can be thoughtfully filled.
Please note that the Participant will be assigned to and primarily mentored by APHC but will have a duty
assignment within the DCS G-9, Soldier and Family Readiness Division. The duty location for this
opportunity is The Pentagon - Arlington, VA
Qualifications
Master of Public Health or related degree required; doctoral degree preferred. Only participants who are
current students or who have received their degrees within 5 years of appointment start are eligible.
Participants currently slated to receive their degrees within 3 months of application will be considered.

pursuing.
