Injury Epidemiologist, Bureau of Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention

    The Bureau of Environmental Disease and Injury Prevention (EDIP) identifies and assesses environmental and occupational health risks in New York City, and develops policies, programs and services to prevent environmental illnesses, injuries, and death. The Bureau is comprised of five programs - Injury and Violence Prevention, Healthy Homes, Environmental Exposure Assessment and Education, Poison Control Center, and the Office of Environmental Investigation. EDIP's mission is to prevent environmental disease and injury in homes, communities, and the workplace, and to protect health by promoting healthy environments and health equity.

    DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
  • -Create and manage analytic datasets from multiple sources, including mortality and hospitalization; management activities include recoding variables, developing formats, and creating and maintaining associated documentation (codebooks, analytic guidance).
  • -Analyze data from multiple sources including mortality, hospitalization, health surveys, syndromic surveillance and environmental investigations.
  • -Assist with development of injury-focused and policy and program-driving analytic plans.
  • -Conduct data analyses, write up and interpret findings and product data summaries, Agency publications and peer-review manuscripts รข€“ including all analytic activities related to the production of NYC's annual Child Fatality and Review Team report.
  • -Conduct systematic literature reviews of best prevention practices.
  • -Excellent oral and written communication skills for a range of audiences.
  • -Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain relationships with external stakeholders with whom IVPP collaborates on prevention research.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

NOTE:
Probationary Period
Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.

Preferred Skills

Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
Experience with International Classification of Disease (ICD)-10 codes, including differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10 coding schemes
Experience in applied data analysis, and management and analysis of moderate to large size datasets using programming languages such as SAS, SQL and/or R.
Expertise using presentation software such as Excel and PowerPoint
Excellent oral and written communication skills for a range of audiences
Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain relationships with external stakeholders with whom IVPP collaborates on prevention research.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
