Department
Our dynamic Development Department is responsible for raising over $400 million annually in funds in order to meet the financial needs of our organization which allows MSF to carry out its mission effectively and efficiently.
The Foundations team of the Development Department is responsible for developing, managing, and growing strategic relationships with foundation donors.

Project
The Foundations Intern will work closely with the Foundations fundraising team offering day-to-day research and administrative support and meeting project-based needs as they arise. S/he will learn how an international organization approaches and cultivates foundation and corporations in order to receive large donations. Candidates should have interest and some knowledge of fundraising with foundations, particularly knowledge of cultivation processes of NGOs.
The Foundations Intern will also have the opportunity, through working in the office, to learn about MSF's international programs and the role that MSF-USA plays in the MSF movement. This internship is ideal for anyone considering a career in development (fundraising), with a particular focus on large-capacity fundraising, and in the administration of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
The Foundations Intern will assist the Foundations section of MSF's Development Team. This position will provide a practical learning experience to students interested in foundation fundraising through conducting basic prospect research and assisting with cultivating prospective and existing donors.

Tasks
The Foundations Intern will be expected to perform the following tasks: 
  • Assist with carrying out large and small mailings 
  • Assist with researching prospective and existing foundation and corporate donors 
  • Customize presentations, letters, reports, and proposals; complete grant applications 
  • Create and compile supplemental material upon requests by donors (consolidating budgets, gathering media, formatting articles, etc.) 
  • Assist with travel and meeting coordination (inter-departmental conferences, donor visits, field visits, etc.)
  • Attend BBLs, public education events, and staff and department meetings as often as scheduling allows

Requirements
  • Experience or interest in fundraising, particularly with Foundations
  • Capacity to multi-task and ability to prioritize across multiple projects
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word & Excel, constituency database)
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Genuine commitment to the principles and work of MSF

Medical and Operational Research Intern

Department
The Program Department at MSF-USA consists of several units including advocacy, diplomacy, and research arms of both MSF-USA and the international offices of MSF. Units served by the Program Department include the Humanitarian Representation Team (HRT), Access Campaign, Medical Unit, Epicentre, Medical and Operational Research Unit and eHealth Unit.

The Medical & Operational Research Department works on the development of medical and operational research initiatives and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. The Medical & Operational Research team supports the representation of MSF medical and operational priorities to U.S. public and private institutions as well as manages some specific special projects housed at MSF-USA.

Project
The Medical and Operational Research Unit is a part of the Programs Department at MSF-USA and consists of staff working on field research and implementation of innovation projects in the field. They work with MSF’s medical and operational teams (as well as Epicentre) on the planning, organizing, implementation, analysis, and follow up of medical studies and operations research. This Intern will work with the team on several ongoing and planned projects including both literature reviews and creation/editing of various training materials. Additionally, the intern will assist in the development of tracking relevant partnerships and assist in field workshop/training organization. An upper class undergraduate student, nursing student, graduate student or medical student with interest in clinical field medical research, epidemiology, and humanitarian medicine would best suit this position. 

Tasks

  • Assist with further development and tracking of research and development project
  • Perform literature reviews on various topics
  • Assist in preparation of standard operating procedures for operational research
  • Assist in ERB/IRB preparation documents and processes
  • Basic analysis or organization of operations research/epidemiological data
  • Assist in organizing materials for training workshops and project reports
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

Required 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Proficiency in medical literature searches
  • Good understanding of scientific/medical peer-reviewed literature
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Strong interest in operations research/epidemiology, humanitarian medicine and innovation

Preferred 
  • Experience in clinical research or operations research or innovation work
  • Background knowledge of data analysis and epidemiology
  • Expertise and interest in humanitarian medicine and operations research
  • Basic analytic skills using software packages (ie Stata, R, EpiInfo)
